The Route of the Frontier Forts, was created in 1999 by the Heritage Foundation of Castile and Leon. In this route contains all bastioned defense systems in the area since pre-Roman times until the latter eighteenth century.
On this route we can see different classes of historical interpretation in the various nuclei that compose: Ciudad Rodrigo, Aldea del Obispo, Yecla de Yeltes and St. Felicien of Gallegos, of the Spanish, and Almeida, the Portuguese side.
For the A-62, and 90km from Salamanca, we found our first destination: Ciudad Rodrigo.
This town, besides many other attractions, has a walled area, which you can see pits, falsabragas, bridges, the alcazar and even guns, amongst other cosas.También this city has a museum of the fortifications in their guardhouse.
From Ciudad Rodrigo by the SA-324 provincial road, 39 km, leaving for San Felices de los Gallegos, where there is a medieval fortress from which you can see the Church of Santa Maria, ramparts and the castle. Since the keep of the castle, we can discover the breathtaking scenery from there is brought before our eyes.
From San Felices de los Gallegos, continue the path of Yeltes Yecla (11Km by SA-324, and then the CL-527, 20km, and 5 km past the CV167, it may seem complicated, it is not. Anyway I recommend you seek the detailed route on the Michelin Guide, because all I have used this is the most effective and most reliable for me.
In Yecla de Yeltes, we find the Castro de Yecla de Yeltes. This Romanesque building, belongs to the iron age and is very well preserved, and has also been restored, improving their status and allowing that we can go in its entirety. Throughout the whole trip there panels explaining everything we saw, so the visit is very interesting.
Then you will see in this town that houses the shrine of the Virgen del Castillo, and if we want, we can advance along the road to Villavieja of Yeltes to admire Yecla River bridge and the Roman road that is on your left.
To the south, toward Villar de la Yegua and Villar del Ciervo, we will continue our journey to Aldea del Obispo, though, after we make a stop if we, in Siega Verde Archaeological Station, to visit her classroom museum. In Bishop's Village is the jewel of this path: El Real Fuerte de la Conception, one of the best examples of fortifications. This complex defensive seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in different parts shows all the beauty and strength that enabled her role in the wars in the past.
Around here you can also visit the Castle of the Gardon, and The Urban Wall Gardón. From here, go now to the last point of our route: Almeida, Portugal.
There we can admire the system that has the city bastioned perfectly preserved and integrated into the daily lives of the inhabitants of this town. Here, we may also gather strength, delight in the rich cuisine. A tasty end to a long day.
